Champion resources: mana, energy, fury and more
Almost all champions spend a resource every time they cast an ability. The type of resource is one of the clues in Champ Rival, and it is one that rules out a lot: the vast majority of champions use mana, so when it shows red, the secret champion is one of the few that do not.
Mana
The most common resource: 145 of the 173 ChampRival champions use it. It is spent when casting abilities and recovers over time and with items. Examples: Ahri, Ashe, Jinx, Lux, Thresh and Teemo.
Energy
It recovers very quickly and at a steady rate, which lets you use abilities frequently. Examples: Zed, Akali, Shen, Lee Sin and Kennen.
No resource
Some champions spend no resource at all: their abilities only have a cooldown. Examples: Garen, Katarina, Riven and Viego.
Fury
It builds up as you fight and usually empowers champions when it fills. Examples: Tryndamere, Renekton, Shyvana, Gnar and Rek’Sai.
Other resources
- Courage: Sett and Kled.
- Flow: Yasuo and Yone.
- Blood Well: Aatrox.
- Shield: Mordekaiser.
- Ferocity: Rengar.
- Heat: Rumble.
- Crimson Rush: Vladimir.
How the resource shapes the playstyle
The resource is not just a number: it shapes how a champion is played. Those who use mana have to manage it and decide when to spend it; those who use energy can cast abilities almost non-stop but with less room for long mistakes; and champions with no resource, or with fury, courage or flow, tend to reward the rhythm of combat and constant movement over managing a pool.
How to remember each champion’s resource
- Think about the champion’s theme: furious fighters tend to use fury or have no resource, and agile assassins tend to use energy.
- Memorise the exceptions first, since there are few: champions that do not use mana are the minority, so learning them helps in every Champ Rival game.
- Look at the colour of the resource bar when you play LoL: it is the quickest visual clue (for example, blue for mana and yellow for energy).
These unusual resources are a very valuable clue in Champ Rival: if one shows green, the secret champion is one of very few. And if the resource shows red for “mana”, you can focus on those uncommon champions. More ideas in Champ Rival strategy.
