How to play ChampRival

ChampRival is a free League of Legends trivia game that you can play solo against the AI, with a friend or against a random opponent. No sign-up is needed. There are three game modes; this page explains the rules of each one.

Ability Challenge

A turn-based duel on a board of squares, like tic-tac-toe. The winner is whoever completes a full line (row, column or diagonal): 3 squares on a 3x3 board or 4 squares on a 4x4 board.

  1. On your turn you pick a free square on the board.
  2. The icon of a champion's ability or passive appears, without its name. It can be a basic ability (Q, W or E), an ultimate (R) or a passive.
  3. You type the name of the champion it belongs to. You only get one attempt: confirm your answer when you are sure.
  4. If you get it right, the square becomes yours and you see the name of the ability. If you miss or time runs out, the square becomes “disputed” for one turn: your rival can try to guess it on theirs.
  5. If your rival does not guess it either, or does not even try, the square is freed up with a different ability.

Each turn has a time limit (15, 22 or 30 seconds depending on the difficulty against the AI, and 30 seconds in online games). You can also offer a draw or resign. If the board fills up without a line, the game ends in a draw. Learn to recognise the icons with the guide How to recognise abilities.

Champ Rival

A 1v1 duel in which both players look for the same secret champion. Each guess reveals colour clues by comparing it with the secret champion.

  • Type the name of a champion and confirm it. A row of seven clues is shown: gender, position(s), species, resource, range type (melee or ranged), region and release year.
  • Green: matches the secret. Yellow: partial match (for example, they share one of several positions, but not all). Red: no match.
  • On the year, an up arrow means the secret champion was released later and a down arrow means it was released earlier.

You get 10 attempts per round. Whoever guesses first wins the round; if nobody does, the round is cancelled. The match is best of five: the first to win 3 rounds wins. You cannot see your rival’s guesses, only how many they have made. There is a guide with tips in Champ Rival strategy.

Daily Champion

A daily solo challenge: every day there is a new secret champion, the same for all players. It is played with the same clues as Champ Rival, but with no limit on attempts or time. The challenge changes at midnight Spanish time.

Your progress and your streak of consecutive days are stored in your browser. When you get it right you can copy a result made of coloured squares to share it without revealing the champion.

Ways to play: AI, friend or random

  • Against the AI: you play solo against the computer. There are three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal and Hard. In the Ability Challenge, the Hard level uses a 4x4 board.
  • Room with a friend: you create a private room and share the 5-letter code or the invitation link. In the Ability Challenge, the person who creates the room chooses a 3x3 or a 4x4 board.
  • Online match: we pair you with another person who is looking for a game at that moment. If a rival takes a while to show up, you can play against the AI in the meantime.

If your rival disconnects in the middle of a game they have a few seconds to come back; if they do not, you win. In random matches, whoever stops playing for a while loses for inactivity.

Tips to get started

  • Type the full name of the champion and pick the suggestion from the list: names change depending on the language of the website.
  • In the Ability Challenge, when in doubt think about what the icon looks like: colours, elements and objects often give the champion away.
  • In Champ Rival, your first guesses should rule out many possibilities at once. Check the strategy guide.
  • You can switch between Spanish and English at any time with the selector in the header; your game is not lost.
