Positions and roles in League of Legends

A League of Legends match pits two teams of five players against each other, and each player usually takes a different position on the map. Positions are one of the clues in Champ Rival: a champion can fit in several positions, and if it matches in only some of them, the clue turns yellow.

Top

The top lane of the map, where the fight is almost isolated. It is usually played by sturdy fighters and tanks. Examples: Garen, Darius, Fiora, Aatrox and Camille.

Jungle

The jungler does not stay in one lane: they roam the area between them defeating neutral monsters, help their teammates and fight for map objectives such as the Dragon and Baron Nashor. Examples: Amumu, Elise, Evelynn, Hecarim and Graves.

Mid

The central lane, which connects the whole map and lets you reach the others quickly. Mages and assassins are common here. Examples: Ahri, Annie, Azir, Cassiopeia and Zed.

Bottom (marksman)

The bottom lane is shared by the marksman, who attacks from range and deals steady damage once they get gold, and their support. In the game data, “bottom” is the marksman’s position. Examples: Jinx, Caitlyn, Ezreal, Jhin and Lucian.

Support

The support helps their team with control, protection, healing and map vision, rather than seeking kills for themselves. Examples: Alistar, Blitzcrank, Leona, Lulu and Janna.

Champions that play several positions

Many champions can be played in more than one place. Lux, for example, appears as mid and support, and Yasuo as mid, top and bottom. In ChampRival, out of 173 champions, 55 have more than one position. That is why a yellow result in this column is a good clue: your guess and the secret champion share some positions, but not all.
